For our recent home renovation, we decided to ditch the old clutter of a manual treadmill and instead looked for the best low-ceiling treadmill to park in our basement.
Much to our surprise, we found that the most popular mats are not as "flat" (floor deck size) as we thought.
Most of them are big and bulky and don't match the low ceilings of our basement.
My partner is 6'3 and we have an 8' ceiling. So anything that is more than 10 inches off the ground is automatically a dark horse.
For those who just want to know the top picks on our list, here we go.
Overall Best:NordicTrack T-Series
Best Bang for Your Buck Option:Xterra Fitness TR150
Best budget option:ANCHEER folding treadmill
How to choose the right low profile treadmill
Below is how you can find out which mat will and will not fit under your low ceilings. The good news is that the treadmills listed here are actually the lowest profile treadmills you can find, but if you want to look elsewhere, here's a guide to which treadmills work and which don't.
Deckhöhe
Platform height (the part you run and walk on) is the most important thing to look at when purchasing your low-profile treadmill.
To find out how much deck height you can allow, you need to do some measurements. First you need to figure out who is the tallest person that will be riding the treadmill, then you need to figure out how low your ceiling is.
Measure the tallest person using the treadmill, add to the ceiling height and subtract from the ceiling height. You need to leave about 8-10 inches of clearance so you don't hit your head on the ceiling.
deckbreite
The next thing to pay attention to is the width of the deck. Trust me when I say you don't want to run or walk on a thin surface. The reason for this is that when you need to stand on a thin surface, you are constantly looking down and focusing on your feet to keep them on track with the treadmill. This saves you from focusing on the TV or other things that are more productive than focusing on the floor.
After spending a good month researching options, reading specs and customer reviews, we finally settled on the top five low ceiling treadmills.
Low Profile Mats - Our Best Choice

Most of the budget treadmills we've reviewed are hampered by low-quality motors that make them impossible to ride. They are good for a light run at best, and not for long as they wear out quickly.
This is not the case with the Nordictrack T series treadmills. There are two models in this line, the 6S and the 6.5S.
These two treadmills will give you an absolute workout, especially if you run with a game program likeZwiftGenericName. And they come with an 8-inch flat deck that's perfect for low ceilings.
We particularly like the 6.5S. Fits right in our basement. Also, it folds up and can be parked in a corner after use.
It features a 20" x 55" floor harness with shock-absorbing FlexSelect cushioning that gives even the tallest user enough leg room to walk and run with full strides.
The structure is built like a tank. No wobble, even at top speed, which is an impressive 16 km/h.
The slope can be adjusted in 1% increments from 0-10%.
Speaking of speed, the 6.5S is powered by a 2.6 CHP DurX Commercial Plus engine. The working butter is not only smooth and vibration-free, but also cools down automatically if accidentally overheated.
There's a large 10-inch interactive touchscreen to keep you entertained while working out. The other essentials like cup holders and heart rate sensors are included.
Nordictrack offers a 1-year iFit subscription for free. This is worth $468 and gives you access to on-demand live training. Trainers can connect to their treadmill remotely via Wi-Fi and control the incline and descent to take their workout to the next level.
As if that wasn't already a great value, professional installation is included free of charge.
2. XTERRA Fitness TR150 Low Profile Treadmill -best value
best features
- Low profile treadmill with 5" high deck
- Perfect for basements with 7-foot ceilings
- 16 x 50 inch pitch
- Motor 2,25 CV
- Sturdy treadmill with sturdy steel frame
- 5-Zoll-LCD-Display
- Speed increase from 0.6-10 mph
- 3 manual tilt settings
- 12 preset workout programs
- pulse sensors
- accessory holder
XTERRA's TR150 is one of the best low-profile treadmills on this list. It has a deck that is just 4 inches off the ground when flat and just 5.5 inches off the highest pitch setting.
This is perfect for basements with ceilings as low as 7 feet, which is the standard ceiling clearance.
But it's not just about saving space. This is a very sturdy treadmill with a sturdy steel frame. It doesn't wobble at all even when you walk on the tread. On the other hand, having an extra pair of hands to help will make assembly easier.
The floor platform is 16" X 50". This is not as wide as commercial mats. But it also works well for tall users, unless you're trying for a high-speed sprint; in that case, you should opt for a much more expensive device.
The XTERRA T150's speed can be increased from 0.5 to 10 km/h and there are 3 manual incline settings. We also like the one-touch speed change button, which lets you switch between speeds on the go without fumbling with too many controls.
This is great for HIIT workouts as you can easily switch between high and low speeds.
Under the hood is a 2.25 HP engine that runs smoothly and quietly. We know that rest is subjective. A good description of the noise would be that even at high speed you can easily watch TV without the volume being drowned out by the engine noise. It works for us.
The 5-inch LCD display is graphic-rich, showing details like time and distance traveled in clear, easy-to-read graphics. For example, a 5 mile run will be displayed as a lap in the shape of a circle.
The T150 has 12 preset workouts to choose from. And there are wrist-wrist sensors to track your heart rate and calories burned.
Accessory support completes the rounded list of features.
3. ANCHEER Folding Treadmill -The cheapest
best features
- Affordable, low-profile treadmill
- 18 x 48.4 inch pitch
- 12 layers and 4 shock absorbing silicone pads
- Vibration-free steel frame
- 5-Zoll-LCD-Display
- Adjustable speed from 0-8.6 mph
- 2 manual tilt levels
- Grip pulse sensor records heart rate and pulse
- Compatible with the G-Fit app for access to preset workouts
- Foldable with wheels for easy transport
If you don't want to spend as much as our #1, this folding mat from Ancheer is perfect for your basement or low ceiling.
It's a professional-quality compact treadmill for home use that features a strong stainless steel frame, roomy treadmill, and decent-sized LCD touchscreen.
The tread is lined with several layers of dampening and 4 silicone pads that reduce vibrations to an absolute minimum. This also ensures that your joints don't hurt after a few months of use. Even at high speeds, the surface is smooth on the ankles and knees.
There are two manual incline levels at 3% and 5%. That might seem lukewarm when compared to the top 10% of our pick. But most people don't need more than 5%.
Couple that with a top speed of 8.6 mph and you've got yourself a workout as good as any.
The 5-inch multifunctional LCD display is like a mini infotainment center that shows you important stats such as time, speed, distance covered, heart rate and pulse, calories burned and the currently selected fitness program.
You can sync the treadmill with the G-Fit app, which lets you choose from several preset workout programs that can be tailored to your fitness goals.
When you're not using stats, the screen can be synced via Bluetooth to play your favorite workout tracks.
It has a maximum weight capacity of 260 lbs. and can be folded after use. There are casters on the front so you can move it to another room for storage after use.
4. Weslo Cadence G 5.9 - Best Budget Low Ceiling Treadmill
best features
- The cheapest mat for low ceilings
- 9" deck height at maximum tilt setting
- 3 manual tilt settings
- 16 x 50” tread with Comfort Cell padding
- 5-inch blue-tinted LCD display
- 6 built-in training programs
- Weight capacity of 275 pounds.
When choosing the best treadmill for low ceilings, we were torn between the Weslo Cadence G 5.9 and the Norditrack T Series 6.5S.
We ended up opting for the latter because of the lower deck height and the warranty that Weslo offers on the G 5.9, which is only 6 months.
So if you're not stuck on warranty and looking for a less expensive alternative to our #1, consider the Weslo Cadence G 5.9.
This small treadmill has a small form factor. It's just 29 inches wide and 64.5 inches long, with a deck measuring just 4 inches at its lowest point and 9 inches at the maximum tilt setting. So if you have an 8' plus ceiling this would fit perfectly.
In addition, after use, it can be folded and stored upright.
It's built like a rock with a sturdy steel frame. Assembled, it weighs nearly 150 pounds. And there is no free assembly along with the package. So an extra pair of hands definitely comes in handy.
It has a 16 x 50 inch belt that provides enough space for comfortable walking and light running. (Not a sprint though)
The tread is lined with Comfort Cell cushioning, which absorbs impact and ensures a smooth ride on your joints.
There are three manual tilt settings that can be adjusted from 1.38 degrees to 4.16 degrees. Again not the best. Works great for a home workout machine.
There are 6 built-in workout programs to choose from. Accessing the controls and switching between programs is as easy as touching a few menu options on the 5-inch color LCD display. The blue tint that reduces glare and improves visibility is a nice touch.
The Cadence G 5.9 has a maximum weight capacity of 275 lbs.
There is a newer G 5.9i model. But we found the original much better.
5. EFITMENT Slimline Treadmill
best features
- Lowest profile of any treadmill on this list
- Deck height of only 4.5 inches
- 9 built-in training programs
- 2 manual tilt settings
- 1.5 hp engine
- 8 cushioning pads for shock absorption
- pulse sensor
- Maximum speed of 7.5 km/h
- Maximum weight capacity of 220 lbs.
- bluetooth connectivity
- Built-in stereo speakers
- Best choice for apartments and compact areas with low ceilings
Last but not least, we have the Slimline EFITMENT Motorized Treadmill which deserves the distinction of having one of the lowest platform heights of any treadmill on this list.
Amazingly, the deck is only 4.5 inches off the ground. This will fit in any basement with a standard ceiling clearance, even if the tallest user is over 6 feet tall because this treadmill deck is very flat.
The caveat is that the floor platform is smaller than most. It's just 47.2L x 15.7W.
If you're used to running at high speeds and maximum strides, this might be too tight for comfort.
However, users under 6' should find it comfortable and roomy.
The floor platform is coated with 8 shock-absorbing pads that reduce impact by almost 40% compared to road running.
Efitment Slimline has 9 built-in training programs that you can select based on your training goals. We especially like the HIIT programs, which automatically switch between high and low speed settings.
The treadmill has two manual incline settings and a maximum speed of 7.5 MPH. The 1.5 hp engine is reasonably quiet. But it does not automatically lubricate. So you need to throw in some elbow grease every now and then.
Another standard feature missing here is an LCD touchscreen console.
Instead, the Slimline has a 3mm audio jack and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to stream your music through the built-in stereo speakers.
This is not a hindrance for us, as we are rarely stuck in front of the screen while running. In addition, all the important details such as calories, distance and heart rate are displayed on the small control screen.
It has a maximum weight capacity of 220 lbs.
Quick tips on choosing the best mat for your low ceilings
There are some key factors to consider before choosing the best low ceiling mat.
ceiling height
How low is the ceiling? In the United States, the minimum ceiling height for residential spaces is 8 feet. But with insulation, 9' is the norm today.
For basements, it's 6'8". But most basements are at least 7 feet.
You should make your choice based on where you plan to place the treadmill. If it's a standard-sized room, you have a lot more options.
However, if you are in a basement (like we were), you should check the deck height of the treadmill when it is raised to its highest point and the height of the tallest user who will be using it.
For example, our number 1 Norditrack 6.5S has an 8-inch deck. My partner is 6.3'.
It's 6.11 minutes. Add a few inches for extra walking space. So 7.4 inches is a comfortable height for us. The number may vary for you. Calculate this to make sure you can walk and run comfortably.
treadmill size
Low profile treadmills are often advertised as space savers.
The downside is that the steps can be very narrow, which can be too narrow for a tall user when running at full speed.
Here you can calculate your total stride lengthhttps:///www.active.com/running/articles/how-to-find-your-perfect-stride-length
The seam length can vary greatly from person to person. But on average, 50-55 inches is a good profile belt length that will allow even a tall wearer to walk comfortably.

The width of the tread can vary greatly depending on the brand. However, 17-20 inches should be comfortable for home use.
incline and speed
If you're using the treadmill for brisk walking, even a top speed of 6-7 mph should be enough for a good workout. But if you like to run, look for a treadmill that has a top speed of at least 10 mph, if not more.
A 10% tilt is considered a standard feature on most high-end devices. Cheap ones can offer up to 5% incline in one or two manual steps.
Higher is not always better. If you have joint problems, it is best to use the treadmill in the flat treadmill position.
So only buy what you need rather than being swayed by fancy features you won't be using.
Deck padding to protect joints
Most treadmills provide some form of shock absorption in the tread. All the treadmills here are perfect for people with bad knees or ankles.
The cushioning on these mats is among the best. If you're looking for a treadmill outside of this list, you need to ask yourself a few questions.
Is treadmill cushioning really effective? What is the exact type of cushioning system offered?
Higher quality units like our #1 offer multiple layers in the treadmill in addition to the silicone pads.
But budget units can only offer one of the two.
So that users of all ages can use them, we have selected only the best mats that provide excellent joint cushioning.
controls and functions
Are the controls easily accessible? Does it come with a touchscreen display? Are there special buttons to increase and decrease speed and incline?
The most basic settings should always be accessible with a click or two at best.
If they're buried in menus, it's very difficult to access them on the go.
Not all treadmills come with a touchscreen. To be honest, it doesn't really matter as long as it's easy to use and ticks the other boxes.
Engine / Maximum Speed / Incline
The treadmill's motor determines how smoothly it runs, even after hours of continuous use.
Output power is measured in continuous horsepower (CHP). But most manufacturers do not mention this number in the description.
As a general rule, look for a treadmill that is at least 1.5kW. The more the better.
Also, a self-lubricating engine has less risk of malfunctioning or burning out after a few months of use. If it doesn't lubricate automatically, you'll have to do it manually.
Does the treadmill allow you to set an incline so you can climb the hill? This is something that is a must for me. This is how I build my big calves.
