Section IV – Chick-fil-A Franchise Background Information

19 things you need to know about the Chick-fil-A franchise

Andrew Cathy appointed new CEO

1. In mid-September 2021, Chick-fil-A announced that then-CEO Dan T. Cathy would step down on November 1, ending an eight-year run in which the chicken chain has grown into an empire of more than 2600 units. Andrew T. Cathy, son of Dan Cathy, would take over. Dan Cathy remains President of Chick-fil-A. Tim Tassopoulos, current President and COO, will also continue in his role.

2. Andrew Cathy, only the chain's third CEO, began his career at Chick-fil-A in 2005, where he spent two years as a store manager in St. Louis. Petersburg, Fla. He joined the Support Center team in 2007 as a consultant on franchisee selection. After becoming Franchise Selection Lead, Andrew Cathy joined Chick-fil-A's Executive Committee in 2015 as Director of Personnel before becoming Head of Operations. He then led international strategy in 2016 and was appointed Vice President of Operations in 2019.

3. Andrew Cathy said: “Over the years I have been fortunate to work with and learn from so many operators and executives at Chick-fil-A, including my father and grandfather. I look forward to continuing to work closely with our amazing operators and employees as we continue to have a positive impact on the communities we serve as a purpose-driven company and one of America's most trusted brands."

4. Dan Cathy became President and COO of Chick-fil-A in 2001 and CEO in 2013. He was named President following the death of Truett Cathy in September 2014 at the age of 93. When he was named president and COO for First Time, the chain had sales of $1.24 billion and had just over 1,000 restaurants. When he became CEO, the company had sales of $5.78 billion from 1,881 restaurants. It is now by far the most profitable chicken chain in the country.

5. Dan Cathy said, “The most successful CEO transitions happen when the next leader is ready to take the lead. I have every confidence that Andrew is ready. As a private family business, Chick-fil-A is able to take a broader view of succession and approach such a transition in a thoughtful and coordinated manner. Although rare in today's business world, conscious, long-term succession planning offers us stability and continuity in a time of tremendous opportunity. I am in excellent health, I continue to love this business and you all wholeheartedly, and I look forward to Chick-fil-A and our future together more than ever. Instead, this CEO change is about Andrew and his willingness to lead us.”

6. Under Dan Cathy's tenure, Chick-fil-A has expanded to 48 states, including entering the New York City market in the fall of 2015. It also entered Toronto, Canada in 2019 and plans to expand to Puerto as well Rico to expand to Hawaii next year. Chick-fil-A expanded by 107 Netto stores from 2019-2020 after adding 130 locations the previous year.

7. Dan Cathy, 68, told the Atlanta Business Chronicle, “One of the things we've learned is that you shouldn't switch during a crisis. You don't want to do this if the wheels are falling apart. You don't want to do this when the leader has long since exhausted his reception and everyone is waiting for him to back off or leave. They want to pass the baton when things are at their best.”

Testes Express Drive-Thru-Spuren

8. In late June 2022, Chick-fil-A unveiled its latest drive-thru technology, which could solve some of the brand's problems with drive-thru crowds. Chick-fil-A is piloting an express drive-thru lane exclusive to customers who have pre-ordered through the brand's app. It is currently available in around 60 stores, with the potential to expand to more stores by 2023 pending further testing, the company said.

9. Recently there have been stories of Chick-fil-A traffic causing reports of zone violations and other congestion. In Newtown Township, Pennsylvania, the board of directors approved an agreement to build a 400-square-foot addition to a Chick-fil-A kitchen and right-turn lane along Main Street to address "significant stacking issues." He also lit a diversion lane to allow customers who have received their orders to go through the pickup window and exit the parking lot.

10. Chick-fil-A believes the option will reduce on-site wait times (since guests using it are pick-up only); Offer users a new fast and convenient option when they don't want to wait, but with the same drive-through experience that doesn't require them to get out of their car; and enable staff to serve customers more efficiently, "but still very carefully." Jonathan Lassiter, senior integration lead for Chick-fil-A's service and hospitality team, called the express drive-thru lane "a game changer for our busy customers and our team members."

11. Logistically, the expressway is a partially or fully dedicated drive-thru lane. Customers who order in advance can skip the other line and go straight to pickup. Customers select a location in the app and, if available, select Drive-Thru Express as the destination, then place an order. When they arrive, the sign points to the express lane, where they use the app to scan a QR code on the dedicated lane before stopping to pick up their order from a Chick-fil-A employee.

12. Lassiter said, “We see this as a way to serve customers more efficiently and give them more control over their experience. The longest part of our drive-through ordering process is the short wait before you receive your order. The expressway significantly reduces ordering and payment times, ensuring customers have access to more speed, ease and convenience when they want it most.”

(Video) Can You REALLY Own a Chick-Fil-A Franchise for Only $10,000?

13. Chick-fil-A said the option is "part of a more personal experience where guests choose their own adventure." In other words, it doesn't replace the ability to order at the drive-thru line or at the restaurant. Or pick up in store.

14. Lassiter added, "We know Chick-fil-A restaurants are busy because customers value the hospitality experience and service we provide. We focus on speed, quality, accuracy and friendly service. By allowing guests to pre-order and pay via the Chick-fil-A app, checking in in the exclusive lane becomes a seamless experience, making the express drive-thru lane a convenient new option .”

15. In tests, the company said the expressway reduces wait times "significantly" because consumers have already made the order and payment. And “most of the guests” choose the express drive-thru again when they visit.

company history

16. Chick-fil-A dates back to 1946 when S. Truett Cathy opened the Dwarf Grill (later renamed the Dwarf House) in Hapeville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. For several years, Cathy served traditional food. Then, in 1961, Cathy found a pressure fryer that cooked fried chicken as quickly as a fast-food hamburger. Cathy began experimenting with fried chicken sandwich recipes and settled on Chick-fil-A's signature chicken sandwich.

17. Cathy felt he had a hit item on his hands and changed his restaurant business to focus on the chicken sandwich. Between 1964 and 1967, the sandwich was licensed to over fifty restaurants, including the Waffle House and the new Houston Astrodome's concession stands. In 1967, Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in the Greenbrier Mall in suburban Atlanta. Cathy's risk paid off and the chicken sandwich was a hit with customers. Over the next several decades, Chick-fil-A continued to grow by opening locations in food courts in suburban malls.

18. The first independent Chick-fil-A opened in 1986, becoming the chain's preferred business model, although the chain remains a mall staple. In the 1990s, Chick-fil-A began expanding beyond the southern United States. Today, Chick-fil-A is in 48 states and Washington, D.C. The Cathy family still owns and operates Chic-fil-A.
